Team NC flyfishing at Americas Cup
« on: August 27, 2009, 11:42:56 PM »
I just wanted to pass on the results so far at the Americas Cup.  Im really proud of my fellow NC teammates.  They are sweeping it 1,2,3.  Results can be found here.

That's great news.  I thought you boys would kick some butt up there.

So, how's the tourney working with the new rules and all?  Any field reports or pics yet?

That is neat....that scoring system kinda messes me up still haven't quite figured it  out but I guess the more fish you catch the better off you are...

Im not sure flyfisherpa.  I know they are doing the fishpoints system so more smaller fish will def get you more points than a few tanks.  The first day Eugene Shuler and Chris Lee were in the lead.  Then Ryan Harmon and Kevin Lowe came on strong, Kevin had over 20k in fish points I think.  I will call Lee or one of the guys and get some info and get back to you guys.  They changed the format to a "bring your controller and fish wherever you want" thing.  We thought this was odd and gave an unfair advantage to the locals.  It looks like they found the fish though.  Im curious how the lake beat will work......they are killer.

Hell all you need to do is find a lake that is loaded with trout. Its a strange format and it looks like less teams entered it because of the format.  If they go to a decent lake they got a great lead already!

Spoke with Chris Lee today.  He said that they thought they had it in the bag going 1st 2nd.  Then some local guys got on some awseome lake and cleaned house.  They caught an absurd number of fish and won it.  Im happy for the guys that won it, they went out there and did what they came to do.  Sometimes its your day to win and sometimes its your day for dead last.  I notice more and more that the lake venues are what makes and breaks people, 2010 will be my loch style fishing journey.

Heads up!  Huge generalization coming: "loch style comp. fishing depends more upon skill and wit than river fishing."

Yes, it's a generalization.  But just think about it?  In a boat you can go wherever any other angler can go... so it levels the playing field.  In a boat you don't have to kneel down, run, sweat, swim, and jump around debris... so it levels the playing field.  In a boat the fish really can't be "force fed" patterns based on stream speed... so it levels the playing field.  And so on.

And for some reason I feel like breaking out into song now: "I"m on a boat!... got my flippy floppies."

I agree.  I know guys up here that have fished water there whole life and slay fish.  I mention fishing trout....in a lake....from a boat....on a fly rod......and they give me the "dont need to fish the lake got trout right here spill".  Im a glutton for punishment, i like the hardest pickiest most technically challenging shit i can find.  And to date its finding and catching fish in impoundments.

The biggest issue I have found with lakes is finding a suitable lakes in the east.  I only know of one lake in my area and it is strictly bank fishing.  Not may lakes in my area are strictly cold water species and i am sure you have the same deal in NC. I will get some lake fishing in this fall but it will be for stockers.  I figure some practice is better than none.
