I was fishing one of my favorite runs when a guy jumped in front of me and started fishing the heart of the run. OK, no problem, I will slow down and wait for him to move upstream and I will follow behind him. Not ideal but I will deal. He gets to the top of the run and then starts fishing back to me all the while chatting to me like I was his best friend. My first impulse was to hit him up the side of his head with my net. Second impulse was to snag his line. It was a gorgeous day and I did not want to ruin it by getting angry. So I said let see how we can fish given these conditions. Where else can I fish? I looked around and noticed a piece of water over there that no one fishes and another stretch of water that that I have always overlooked. I would like to tell you that I started yanking fish out of these places left and right. However I did catch 3 quality fish and to tell you the truth I felt better about these 3 fish than if I had pulled a dozen out of the main section of the run.
I realized that I was in rut. Since then I am trying all kinds of ways to catch fish and looking for all kinds of overlooked water to fish. I am finding quality fish in places that I have walked by in the past. Instead of saying oh crap there is a guy on my favorite run, now it is an opportunity to improve my skills.

Dear Loren

If I had 10 foot arms like you then I would not need a net. Your arms are so long that you can scratch your head and tie your shoes without bending over.

Not always a positive influence which pushes us to better heights eh? Kind of in the same category... I know that I learned a great deal losing at competitions... coming in last at one probably my biggest learning experience!
