Technique Percentage
« on: February 05, 2010, 05:09:08 PM »
I just finished watching Davy wottons Wet Fly Ways. What an awsome video. This guy is amazing. He's talking on camera with his line just hanging in the water behind him and he catches a fish!!!!
Anyway, with all the techniques out there like the Euro nymphing, wet flys, dry/ droppers/ streamers etc... what percentage of these techniques is your favorite ex: euro 25% dry dropper 25% wets 15
etc....

Second question is if you were only allowed to take one set up to a stream you never fished before what rig would you take and why?

Thanks
Frank

I was considering ordering his video, so thanks for the review Frank!
I would absolutely love to watch Davy in action sometime (its truly unfortunate that we live on opposite sides of the continent), he is truly a legend in our time...

Those are some excellent and thought-provoking questions Frank! I personally fish Euro-style 65%; Wets 20% and Dry/Dropper 10%  and Streamers for the remaining 5% (if I did my math correctly ;) ). This is only a very general statement of course, as the water conditions; time of day; and insect activity will typically dictate which technique, presentation and pattern will be most effective under those conditions (hypothetically of course)

In response to your second question: My Czech Nymph setup would most likely be my first choice, as the presentation can be altered to effectively provide coverage for the various depths and for an extended duration and length of the drift.

Anyways, that's just my 2 cents...

Cheers,
Todd

Nymphing (Both Euro and Harvey/Humpheries Method)-  To me they go hand and hand with my style- 70%
Dropper Dry - 10%
Wet Flies- 10%
Streamers - 5%
Drys - 5%

Those are really just estimates some years the conditions will push my streamer fishing up to more around 10%.  This year I spent more time than usual on wets and I would most like have been almost 20% of the time.  But on average that is my breakdown.

This year I fished mostly morning shifts on the Farmington,Swift, and Westfield.  This has a great impact on selected method.  I would pretty consistantly start with streamers before daylight and switch over to euro/czech once the streamer bite would ebb.  I was off the water before many of the big afternoon/evening hatches would take place.  Time restraints made me fish certain windows.  I had some memorable days with softies and wets, but relied too often on the euro crutch.  The breakdown would be something like this:
70% euro/czech
15% streamer
10% wets
5% dry/dry dropper

Mine is horrible.

Euro nymphing 95%
everything else 5%

For me Euro nymphing produces! The system is also more versatile than people know. You can shorten up that butt section a bit and do a screwed up form of just about anything with it.

Next season I plan on doing a lot more of everything else. Reason being I'm getting bored of tying beadhead nymphs to be honest. I'll always have a Euro setup within a short walk because like I said it produces!

With that being said if I always base my rigs on flows and where I'll be fishing. If I know the river is blown out its streamer time because you want something that pushes water and you can hold in the fish's face. If its late summer/early fall and I know the water is real skinny then I'll go with a dry dropper rig of just a dry even, I like to feel like Brad Pitt too sometimes. If I was going to a place like the Letort or something then I would not put on a Euro rig either.

Long story short we fish to catch fish and in my neck of the woods you'd be challenged to find water where Euro nymphing did not produce.

It's really hard to nail down exact percentages, but I might say I'm somewhere inbetween 90 and 91 percent Euro :)  Not really, but I hope we're painting the picture here.  As Nick mentioned it's just so dam effective.  But not ALL the

Maybe its my Catskill teachings or influences of some of my mentors but it looks like I use alot more dry fly fishing than most...On average I would say 60% nymphing, 25% dry , 15% streamer...This of course changes with seasons...Today it was 100% euro nymphing but ask me in end of May and I will be chasing sipping browns on the East Branch with drys all day...Some days there is nothing more fun than to hit a wild trout stream with big bushy drys...and other times I love to pick apart a section of water with a pair deep drifting nymphs...I know I am the minority on this site but dam it is exciting to watch a trout suck in your dry and explode on the surface. Unfortunately they dont eat dries all day, every day..

I wouldn't say your the minority I think we all secretly enjoy fishing dries for that very reason.

I enjoy fishing streamers high in the water where you can see the the fish smash it. I also like fishing streamers on the swing when you feel them nail it on the end of the swing.

Amen!  I doubt there's an angler here who doesn't resemble that statement.  Many of the comp. guys though just sort of "curb" that yearning, sometimes for years, sometimes for life, to get better at the "whole game."

I'm REALLY looking forward to dry fly fishing this up coming season.  I've been tying stimmies and klinks this week just for fun.

Last season it was 90% nymphing and about 5% dries.  I really, really want to get sme more dry fly fishing in this year.  Maybe get it down to a 70%-30% or a 60%-40%!

I spend considerable time fishing techniques other than straight nymphs.  These become very important in sessions 4 and 5 (and 2).  They are also important when conditions dictate.  I know, for me, dries and streamers were crucial to any success I had at the 2008 America's Cup.  Nymphing filled in some voids, but my beat draw and the conditions I faces were better suited to other disciplines.  Had I not practiced them all across a broad array of water and conditions I would have really struggled.

There are many, many times when I am training on working a beat that I will fish 4 or 5 disciplines to a single water feature before I move along.  That is where a versatile leader is really, really nice.  It's rewarding to learn that some fish seem to come better so a certain presentation than others.  Starting with a single dry, then adding a dropper, then moving to a single nymph, then multi nymphs than attacking with a streamer rig can all catch fish that may have not taken one of the others.

Deciding when to this or when to stick with a single presentation for a section of water...I'm still looking for that formula.  Will I do better covering water, or will I do better attacking the water?  I think it depends much on fishing pressure.  I'd probably be more apt to cover a beat if I was first  or second through.  If there has been pressure than I am going to look in every nook and cranny with more uncommon presentations.
