I've been using a caddis larva as an anchor almost exclusiely since August.  It is still taking fish this far into December.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

what pattern are you using Chris.  I have had good luck with an olive czech with a copper bead this fall and winter as an anchor.

This one

Details

These are tied on a size telve but I've tied them down to 18.
I think this fly also passes for a small cranefly larve in the larger size.

I thought that was the one.   I like the look of that fly.  What kind of bead is that it really has a nice look to it.

Its a copper faceted tungsten I got from Mountain Fly shop online.  I've used round copper tung as well but this bead really adds to it.

I was out on my local freestone the other day and here is what I found.

Never seen a stonefly like this before. Has a white stripe like a Iso nymph.

This rock worm picked a fight with the wrong cased caddis.

The first sign Spring is on the way. These are the first hatch around here.

Nice Pics Nick. That is a neat looking stone fly.  I am guessing it was about ready to hatch.

I have seen those on a small river that I used to fish late in the winter before also.  I think it is Taeniopteryx nivalis early black stones.  They have pronounced wing pads and the iso stripe.  I like the caddis battle pic.
