Greetings from Georgia
« on: February 27, 2011, 04:51:18 PM »
I'm originally from the Buffalo, NY area and moved to Georgia 13 years ago. I grew up hunting and fishing for anything that swims and have been fly fishing for close to 20 years. I spent 8 years tournament fishing for bass (I know, the black arts) before throwing in the towel due to rising gas costs and reduced tournament payouts. While I've still kept my finger of the pulse of the tournament scene and occasionally slipping in to take some money, I've still been wanting to get back that competitive spirit I once had. So when I saw that there were some local competitions for fly fishing, I wanted in.
After fishing the SE qualifier last weekend, I've decided that I wanted to get back into the competitive fishing side of the equation. I thought I was a good fisherman until last weekend. I learned a lot fishing along side the Team USA guys and also learned that I have a lot to learn. Yes I got my butt kicked, but that has only motivated me to get better (and buy more flyrods  ;D). Unfortunately, I just had elbow surgery on Wednesday, so I will have to wait a month or so until I can start working on my competition techniques. I've signed up to judge the Nationals in NC this May, so I hope to see how some of the top guys get the job done.

Greetings and salutations.  Your story puts a smile on my face as it's proof positive that this system we've been building is working.  Get that elbow healed up, looking forward hearing about your journey into the competitive fly fishing side of things.

btw, why can't your story read: "originally from the Georgia area and moved to Buffalo, NY  13 years ago."  Aren't there any other comp nuts in this god forsaken steel town!

Nope no other competition nuts up there. They all are too depressed with the Bills and Sabres stinking it up to want to have to deal with the losses of competition. That's why I left so I would be the only one sulking on the river after a Bills game.

Yeah, the Bills are a lost cause.  But the Sabres now... they we're just bought by a rich gas tycoon who actually cried at his acceptance speech and said: "there will be no financial barriers for this team in the future."  We're a little excited.

I started to take a drink of that Kool-Aid too, but I thought it might poison. I hope they do it, but we'll have to wait and see.

Welcome!

Hope that elbow heals up nicely.

Just curious about the bass events - was there any fly fishing involved?  I hear of guys entering those events with a fly rod on ocassion, but never talked to anyone who'd done it first hand.

I never used a flrod during a tounament. Flyrods were deemed illegal during bass tournaments, although I couldn't tell you why. It's not like fly fishing gave you an advantage.

Thanks for the well wishes on the elbow. We haad 70s here this weekend and it was killing me not to fish. I can't even tie flies right now.

Thanks Ben. I'm just now getting into the comp fishing and I'm really enjoying it. I think I've seen you on another site for Ga fishing. I won't mention the name of it, but I go by Deepwader there.

Glad to have ya, Bob.  I'm also on that "other board", known as flyberd.

And, Ben, just noticed you're right down the road from me.  Let me know if you wanna hook up for some local fishing, ie bass, striper, etc.

Will do James...good to see you on hear as well!  Give me a shout over on that other board or this one and we will exchange numbers. I stay pretty busy but try to make time when I can for trips with new friends, and will make no exception for you especially as close as you are.
