Howdy from Montana
« on: September 30, 2011, 05:11:54 PM »
Hey all,

I've been lurking for a while, so I thought I'd step out of the shadows and introduce myself. I grew up in Vermont, but spent a lot of the last 8 years in State College, PA fishing as much as grad school allowed. Ok, fine, more. I live in Missoula now, learning how to navigate these big waters. I've been on the periphery of a couple competitions, eavesdropping and tying and fishing before and after, but haven't yet found a need to join in. I have enjoyed getting to know the few folks I have met and hope to meet a few more here. Seems like a good group of guys despite all your obvious obsessive and addictive tendencies... ;)

In addition to my fishing problem I also have a small hunting issue. Archery and bird hunting hold most of my attention. My gsp and viszla keep me honest, humble, active, and poor. In my other life, I have a phd in forestry and "human dimensions of natural resources" (read: how people interact with the natural world) from Penn State. I do a lot of work with statistics, but on good days I get to interact with forest landowners and others who care about forests, water, and wildlife. Not a terrible gig.

I may not have a lot to offer in terms of techniques and tips, but if anyone wants to fish NW Montana, drop a note.

Looking forward to getting to know some folks and joining the obsession,

Alex

Sounds like you've fished many of my favorite waters Alex.  Great to have you on the site.  Is Ben a relation of yours?

Welcome and I love Missoula! Used to be a couple regular trips out there a year especially Rock Creek salmon fly hatch!

Most of us have similar "issues"  Alex.  Lol!

I got a cousin living and fly fishing in Helena.  A biologist working for Ducks Unlimited.  I've been meaning to go visit her one of these days in the Blue Sky country...

Hi all,

Yeah, Benny is my little brother. Dejon, I think we met in the parking lot on the Blue before america cup? Sick river down there!

Rock creek is a pretty cool spot. Seems the trout are pressured and small, but the scenery is spectacular and the fish a painted beautifully... The Bitterroot and Blackfoot have been very cooperative, more than a few bruisers in the mix. Found a couple Notellum Creeks and looking for more! Weather is changing this week, clouds are rolling in, and the browns have got to be getting angry. Guess work will have to wait a few more days!

See you around the board!
