Introduction – Janos Boda
« on: October 12, 2010, 09:55:51 AM »
Hello Everyone:

My name is Janos Boda and I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

I started to fly fish about 8 years ago and I just love it. This year was the first time when I did competition fishing and I entered the Canadian Fly Fishing Championship in Roblin, Manitoba. I loved the atmosphere of the competition, it was a great experience. I learned a lot, and I enjoyed meeting fly fishers coming from across the country. It gave me lots of excitement to put together a team for a competition, winter is long here – at least 6 months – and it was great to look forward to some fishing in the upcoming months :).

In Manitoba, I fish all over the province for different species. Rainbow and brown trout are my favorites, but I love to catch smallmouth bass or lake trout on my fly rods as well. I love to travel, visit new places, and if I have a chance, I try out “new” waters. I enjoy fishing with friends, teammates, my wife, or lately with my son. Stillwater fishing or river fishing, streams in the Rocky Mountains or prairie lakes close to home, I just love it :).

I hope competition fly-fishing will pick up in North America and we will have a chance to enter more tournaments.

Cheers,
Janos

Hi Janos.

I got a HEAP of relatives in Manitoba (and in Saskatchewan for that matter - prairie people and big families...).  I haven't been back that way for several years, but I've been meaning to.  Last time I was there we (I) was flyfishing the Red for a hodge-podge of everything.  I think the Saugers were the big run at that time.

Thanks Everyone.

Jeremiah: I hope that we will be there.

Thanks Dejon, You put together a great website here!

Chris: When you come next time to visit relatives in Manitoba and you would like to chase some “hogs” at the Parkland let me know I can go out with you on Patterson Lake :).

Mark: Yes, I already found lots of good information here; just I need more time to read everything :).

Aaron: I am glad to hear you liked to fish in Manitoba. Yes, Twin, Tokaryk, and Patterson lakes still fish well, I just came back from Patterson Lake, and I got some fish - rainbows and browns – in the 22-26-inch range. Still the American “residents” at Patterson Lake told me that lake is nothing; Pybus Lake is the best of the area, fish at the 25-30-inch, 12-15 pounds range.

Come on guys, the weather is not that bad here; just you have to get use to it :). Yes, I admit the weather at the Nationals was sheety/sheedy :), on the first day it was at our (Manitobans) advantage but the next day even I had some fever :). Of course, you will not see flying boats everywhere in the country, but maybe at Spear Lake you will see some :). Now the weather is still great, one week ago it was 24-26 degree Celsius (75-79 F), but I will not be surprised if in a month there will not be any open water on the lakes :).

Yes, Bob is living around here, now he lives just 1 km from the Manitoba border in Saskatchewan, but he used to live somewhere around Roblin before.

It was in my group, where the wind picked up the boat and flipped it on spear.  We sent Pete (the britt) he was bragging how this isn't that bad and he could get out there. He sat 5ft from shore bouncing in the waves, not moving an inch, then he couldn't get back in that easy, so they called the session. We pulled out all our gear from the boats and put it back in the trailer, we where all just standing around talking trying to figure what to do, When a big gust of wind came in, picked up one the boats from its bow took it air born for a few feet and landed upside down it was a neat sight.

Lol!  Whenever I'm in MB its either 35+ heat (95F for you non metric guys), or -20C with a wind chill!  Still look forward to going back.

The same happened in my session as well; the boat just landed couple of meters front of me, and I just realized how fast a human life could be over :). We never hit the water the session was cancelled. It was the last session for us. When I am thinking about it, I still can smell medals :), I know Spear Lake very well, where to fish to have a chance, and how to catch those fish :). That is ok, it was a great learning curve, I enjoyed every moment of it!!

Chris: You were here a long time ago then :). Last time when we had +35 (95 F) that was in the summer of 2006. Yes, you see -20 C (-4 F) temperatures more often, every winter least 20-40 days like that :).

Anyway, the best months to come here to fly fish are June and September. Some days in April, May, and October could be great as well, but no guarantees ahead :). This year we were fishing in middle of April, but we got some cold weather after that. May was awful; in June, we had lots of rain. The first week of September was rainy again, but after that fly-fishing "heaven weather" started and still it is here :).

Oh come on now... Spear was as clear as Chocolate milk. You really figure you had a chance of catching something? I saw one rise during one of our water skiing "drifts", but that was about it. We spent most of our time waiting out the serious gusts in the lee of the bank by the rock wall.

Sheety, sheety weather, but big ass fish...

You cannot be a 100% sure until you try it :). I did not have a chance to try it :). I prefer to earn blank as I earned on Twin Lakes :). It is not a biggy, just sometimes makes me think :).

Yup, that was the time.  And Agent Orange resistant mosquitos!  Lol!

All kidding aside, MB is a nice place.

It is a great place to be in May, June, and September for sure :). For the other 9 months, well I would not mind to be in BC, Alberta, NC, or Florida :). Well, maybe one day it will happen :).

Janos, sounds like you have it really good where you are.  National level lakes at your calling???  What could be better?

It snows 9 months of the year here in Buffalo, then sleets the other 3.  Any food that grows here is dull and tasteless.  So are the people.  Still, we have the fish!  Lake run steelhead by the bucket loads, king salmon when you're feeling frisky, and small picky little wild brown trout.  Add in the occasional trip for a possible Sturgeon on the Fly, maybe a trophy size bronzeback just because it's like jurassic park here for them.  I could go on.  Anywaze, my point is sure there are much more beautiful places in the world to live... but nothing beats close access to family and fish.  Fortunately for my family there's pretty dam good fishing here... otherwise they wouldn't see nearly so much of me :)

Thanks Todd.

Yes, fishing in Manitoba is still great, but I think in 2-3 weeks lakes would be covered with ice :(.

Did you see Shane’s video about the outing to Clearwater Lake? Here is the link, I hope you enjoy it and maybe you will join us to catch some lake trout on a fly next year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfDt2aZSPfw&feature=youtube_gdata

Yes, we would like to be there in Quebec; we are just waiting for the details.

Cheers,
Janos
