"Bobbering Up!"
« on: September 30, 2009, 11:17:54 AM »
Look here's the bottom line.  If you're going to use a big indicator when pursuing Lake Run fish like a classic Yarn Indicator or Football Foam Shaped one why not just use the latest and best?!  If you can stomach the idea that you're kind of "bobber fishing" anywaze, then just take the extra step and get yourself a pack of "Thingamabobbers."  For those uninitiated they are small soft plastic indicators that use trapped air to float and a grommet to a-fix to line.  They come in all variation of colors and are far superior to many other form of "standard floating type" indicators.  They cast through wind and float through heavy riffles... yet, are still highly sensitive.

If you want to take some of the "fuss and frustration" out of indicator fishing for lake run fish give them a try!

3/4inch is a popular size for lake run fishing, but you can experiment with smaller and larger for varying situations.

You forgot to add they don't turn into ice cubes which is very nice when its below freezing. They work very nice in the winter time.

I usually hate indicators but these really are not that bad even for trout.

I give them a thumbs up as well. Both easy to use and see and ultimately do the job right.

in my book they cannot be beat.  The only problem I have with them is that I didn't think of this 1st.  Damn it!   >:(

Ok.....bobber fishing...hmmmm makes me think of.....

seriously, though, I think this would make a great addition to a fly fisherman's arsenal. I think using this think would help you fish near the "zone" with less hanging up in rocky streams and rivers. Great option to try...now only if I can put my 13 foot rod down and try this...

naaa ;)  bobbers belong on 13ft rods...with a free spinning fly reel.    :o   ???

My question is how would this affect the cast? I would imagine this would weigh more than a tuft of yarn? If the ball at on the line acts to help propel the line then is it fly fishing??  I guess if you were using 5-9 wts the additional weight would not matter but when you are fishing light lines than that would the bobber influence the cast..

Rk, try one!  They are really very light and for some reason don't hinder your cast very much.  They come in different sizes, so you wouldn't cast the bigger 1" "Big Water" one for light line rods... you'd use the little 1/4" one which is like the size of a 12 Dry Fly.

Actually I would like to try one. where can I order the from?  I hate those yarn things and the squeeze on foam or twist on foam ones suck too..Let  me know how i can get a hold of some. How do they attach to the line?

Thread leader through grommet and loop over.  Throw a half hitch in if it slides around.

They do cast a lot better than you you think. They are air filled so they are much lighter than foam or yarn of the same size.

Rka,

I have to hook up with you some time and see how this Center Pinning works.  It does seem like a fun way to fish.

Anytime. I would love to fish with you guys. Unfortunately you guys on the western tribs are kinda far and money is tight. I have been out of a job since last november and now looks like I am about to loose my house...But If I can find a job in the next month...I will take a full week and fish out west with you guys!
