Fishing Vicariously....
« on: October 21, 2010, 11:43:33 PM »
Fisherman from the Great Lakes region, wondering how your fall run has been this year? Since moving from south of the GTA I don't get a lot of steelheading in. Buddies back home have been doing OK this year, just wondering if any of you might like to make a comment on this years returns. From what I understand, you guys south of the boarder get far better runs than us Canadian folk, but wondering... Has this been a good year?

Love to hear anything for you guys, or even something from the W. coast (if they run out there this time of year).

Shane

Have been out almost every other day for the last two weeks.  Fishing mainly our Large Lake Erie Trib.  Overall it has been slow.  There are fish in, you really need to put the miles in to find them.  Once you do it can be a decent day.  Keep in mind that I swing flies 90% of the time.  Usually tubes and Spey Flies.  When I have used eggs or stone flies it definately has been more productive.  Seems like our Lake Erie temperatures have been higher than usual and the fish are still holding just off the mouth of our larger tribs.  My neighbor has been trolling just outside of the mouth and has been nailing steelhead.  I can say the fish that I have taken have been "HOT" -- nearly pulling the rod out of my hand while swinging.  At best its been spotty  -  if you find the spot your in good shape.

Todd's spot on.  As a guide you always want to up sell :)  But the honest truth is were having a pretty slow season thus far.  The main problem is water... we ain't got it.  Not that we haven't had a good spell of rain here and there, but there just aren't sustained flows to hold fish. Last a I checked some of the smaller creeks didn't even seem open.

The saving grace as Todd mentioned is the fish are not only HOT, but I think larger on average then recent years.  If you time it correctly and know just where to go some great days can be had, but it's certainly not easy pickins.  Look for a push of rain and try and get in on the backside.  Or walk the big creek, deal with low visibility, enjoy the scenery, and wait patiently for all hell to break loose.

On the Salmon River (Ontario Trib) my clients have been having great success since Columbus Day.  Typically our river is spotty until November, however this season it's been really good, really early.  Good flows, I am certain, are the reason.

Thanks for the info/updates. Currently I am substituting my river condition watch with weather condition watch.... snow is around the corner and the lakes shall freeze.
Good to hear you guys are getting a few though. Good luck with what is left of the run.

I really don't things have really even started yet here.  I'm expecting a HUGE (fucillo) push of fish in the next few weeks... and then I have a feeling we may see a good winter run of fish.
