Czech Nymph Hooks
« on: March 03, 2011, 07:22:30 PM »
I've been using Knapek and Partridge scud/grub hooks for a couple of years and like both of them.  It seems that the Knapek points are gettng a little smoother in the newer hooks, but I just bought a pack of Skalka hooks from Wflies, and after seeing them thought I might switch from Knapek to Skalka.  They seem very well made.  Recently a fishing partner mentioned Dohiku hooks.  It's time for me to stock up, and my question is which curved hook do you favor and why?

I use Mustad C49S because a) they hold fish well b) they have awesome proportions c) I can get them in 50-packs d) economical. I do like the Dohiku grub hooks as well.  I was never very happy with Skalkas-they seemed to bend out quite easily-and I had breakage issues.

Thanks so much Loren. I haven't fished the Skalkas much.  They are finer wire--at least in the ones I have now.  You've saved me trial and error and perhaps some lost fish.  A buddy of mine, Lloyd Gonzales, likes the Mustad C49S a lot too.  I have a few smaller ones, but haven't tried them in larger sizes for anchor flies.  But I will now.   ;)  If I haven't mentioned it already, for a very unique approach to tying you might take a look at Lloyd's book Fly-fishing Pressured Water.  I doubt you'd adopt his style of tying, but he has some interesting tying methods, and I use and like a few of his patterns in some situations.

Lloyd's book is hands down the best fly fishing/tying book I own! I tie so many of his patterns...there killers....Tell Lloyd for me that he's increased my tying ability and put more fish in my net! Tell him thanks and for goodness sake write another book! ;D

It's all about angles. A good angle creates a good presentation which in turn puts more fish in the net.

I will let him know, Brandon.   He'll be tickled to know someone is actually tying and fishing some of them.  He's said he thinks many folks will find them too different or time consuming to try.  What are your favorites?

Cool dude....i admit...it took some getting used to and they were difficult to tie but now that I can tie them...there awesome....

My favorites are:
Thread-Legged Wet Dun
Paper Case Crawlers
Wiggling Crawlers
Wiggling Swimmer
Deep Drifting Pupa
Half and Half Sedge Emerger..

Dude I could go on...but these ones are some of my favorites.
