more hends info
« on: December 15, 2011, 10:56:08 PM »
So I have been intrigued lately by the hends leader simply because now there is a place to get them here in the states but still confused exactly how they are meant to be used. I know the 900 cm one tapers down to something like 4x but that most people end up cutting something like close to 10 foot off the front to match up diameters with their sighters. To add to the confusion the general consensus is the taper of the hends doesnt really get crankin until the last 10 feet or so. SO if this is the case why spend good money on something magically tapered just to cut off most of the taper? I guess what I really want to know is how the french designed these to be used because surely they didnt design them to be chopped at by a bunch of americans. So anybody?

First off i just wanted to say hello to every body on trout legend. well ty my experience with tapered leaders is when you cut them they never work how there supposed to so i dont cut mine any more i just buy the right size to match the diameter of the sighter im using if that makes any sense

All the leader formulas are confusing, including mine.

The Hends Camou 9m leader is designed to be used as is, no cutting.  It tapers down to 0.21mm.  Simply add a piece of 6-8X tippet and fish small weighted nymphs upstream in the French style.  If you want, you may tie on some 0.20mm sighter (straight or coiled) first, but no sighter is required.  If you have a fast, modern rod, you will find it hard to cast the whole length of the leader.  The leader is also great for small dry flies (BWOs, tricos).

The cutting and all that is simply so that a 0.35mm or larger sighter (much more visible) can be incorporated while maintaining a leader that gradually decreases in diameter (to abide by the competitive rules).

I have one that I bought this winter but I have not tried it out yet.  I will be giving it a workout this spring.  I will post my thoughts after I use it a couple times
