Nick,
You said you don't use tungsten beads on you czech nymphs, do you find that sometimes they don't get down fast because they aren't heavy enough? I tie mine with and without, both with 2 layers of flat lead. It's probably just personal preference.

We will sometimes tie a colored tungsten hot spot bead into the body with the two layers of flat lead to make them heavier if it's needed for deeper or faster water.

I rarely use them in those instances as they don't seem to produce for me as much in water like that (under normal conditions, high water is a different story).  I like the olive czech nymphs in shallower runs and riffles, and for the deeper runs and pools where I need to get down deep fast, I find the woven flies and stoneflies work better as anchors. (for me)

Okay, I'll keep that in mind!

What are your top producing color combo's for the woven's? Is brown/tan any good?

Dark top light bottom always does well.

For the tops I use a lot of Dark brown, brown, dark olive, olive, and green.

For the bottoms I use a lot of yellow, white, cream, and light khaki

I'll mix and match any of those.

Dark brown and yellow, dark olive and yellow or cream have been my best probably.  All work pretty good though.

Brown and yellow woven rubberleg stonefly is pretty killer

Hey Dejon,

These two nymph patterns have accounted for more large Trout for me than anything else that I carry...and, I carry way too much....Georges Odier who worked out of Chuck Fothergill's shop in Aspen, CO, turned me on to this pattern in 1975, as a non-bead head. Chuck is considered the developer of " high stick" nymphing. George swore by this pattern. Many years later, I understand why...

http://www.danica.com/flytier/agbeatty/bh_renegade_wet.htm

I have a whole box of these from #12-#18...With red, gold, chart, and holo tags

SHOP VAC

Hook: TMC 2457, # 16-#20, Diiachi 1120, # 16- # 20
Thread: Gordon Griffith Sheer 14/0 Black
Wire: Lagartan x-Fine, Gold
Abdomen: Danville #47, 6/0 Tobacco Brown
Wing: White Zelon
Bead: Gold, Brass or Tungsten

This is the Craig Matthews Version...it slays

Krystal Emerger

can be tied in a variety of colors to match a specific Mayfly. Fish this from the bottom to the top of the water column...

I noticed that Lance put up his Rainbow Warrior...ONE great Pattern that has accounted for some (many) nice Trouties.

Tim,

That's a great reminder - I really should try winging some of my midges.  Used to be a guy that came into our old shop who was always talking about this super secret little fly that he was constantly nailing fish on. One day he pulled me into the corner and presented my with 1 specimen neatly packaged in a nice little dime bag: it was a red shop vac :)

Dejon,
When is your book coming out? I would really like to read it!

That's kinda out of left field, but which one are you referring to? I've got about 25 half done :)  Post your real name and address and I'll send you a copy when the first one is published  ;)

Thanks for all the replys!

Last year I've been using mostly heavily weights nymphs, I've kind of gotten out of using the "traditionals", GRHE & PT. I was actually thinking of removing them from my box, to make more room for new patterns. Looks like they are still a staple in most fly boxes. I do have some nymphs that look close to the PT, and I have some frenchie's. Loren's new fly, the Baron looks sort of like a PT, but has real nice improvements and it's simple to tie. That's the best part. I really want to have small fly box of nymphs that covers most situations.

What is an iron Lotus fly?

Trout simply cannot help themselves.  They have to try and eat these.
Details

I use these almost exclusively as anchors.  It really doesn't matter what else I tie on, the majority of fish that I get take this fly over the dropper.

actually that pattern on a size 4 streamer hook might do the trick.  You can give it the necessary girth too by laying down a base of yarn.
