What about the Hends leader?
« on: July 02, 2011, 08:12:29 AM »
I've begun the journey of learning to cast a 'mono-only' nymphing rig(spurred on by my controlling at the SE and National USFFT quals), and currently am working with Dejon Hamman's "cheap Hends"(15'/#40Ultragreen + a Rio 9'/trout leader + tippit) and his shorter 16-17' hand-made tapered leader of Ultragreen and Rio tippit--- with an Echo 3106PE Shadow I bought for the effort.  Going to the next level and actually buying a Hends would require a purchase at about $ 25./leader. Leader memory seems to be the bug-a-bo for me.  I've boiled the #40 Ultragreen and Rio trout leader of the above hand made leaders for a total of 45 minutes(3 separate 15' boiling sessions) to get the material limp "as a 90 year-old senior".  For us newbies to Euro-nymphing, what do you comp guys know about the hand-made vs. the Hends in gaining casting efficiency and accuracy twixt the two.

Ultragreen leader material is too limp in my opinion. I use a short leader hand tied using 25lb, 20lb, 15lb, sighter, and tippet. My base leader is 8-10' without sighter. I use maxima clear hard mono, turns the leader over good.

I'm not sure the factory made leader will improve your accuracy.  I know many guys who have hand tied/tailored leaders that are deadly accurate with them and probably wouldn't improve with an identical factory model.

For me it's just a measure of efficiency/laziness.  Fewer knots to hang up in guides is a big plus.

Btw, can't believe they are 25buckeroos now, but one saving grace is, if cared for a bit it should last you a very long time.

Ordered a couple Hends from CzechNymph.com.  With UPS from the Czech Republic  leader cost was 31 USD/leader.  Ouch.

This forum was recommended to me by one of the NC team members.  I have really enjoyed it so far.

Can someone point me towards a formula for the Dejon Hamann's "shorter 16-17' hand-made tapered leader of Ultragreen and Rio tippit".  There is so much information here, I could search for 6 months and still miss it.  I am trying a bunch of different things so I can start fine tuning and personalizing.

Thanks and glad to be here.

I would like to recommend ordering from the site Dejon posted www.czechnymph.com I ordered 4 of the Hends leaders for about $ 12.80 each and 3 packs of UV dubbing that's really nice stuff and the shipping was just under $ 6.00.  I think if you order more then $ 50.00 they cut you a break on shipping.  I also really like the Hends leader but was concerned about the price however $ 13-14 dollars isn't bad, I have probably 12 days of fishing on one leader and there is no signs of wear.

I've just started fishing with  Hends leader, very nice so far. Question - does anyone know if there's a US source for the Siman drop indicator?

Dave,

I make my own drop indicators, on par with Siman's.  My favorite one is a 9-drop, with 4 FL orange, 1 black, then 4 FL chartreuse.  They are awesome, sensitive indicators and float well.

This is my favorite drop indicator, sorry the picture isn't better.

Chris, I make these on about 12lb test mono.  I tested them quite a bit in the low late summer water, sometimes on light-biting fallfish.  I find this color combination to be the most visible for strike detection.

I'm going on 1 year with my current Hends leader...pretty affordable over the long haul IMO.

Alain, nice drop indies, what are you using to make the drops if you dont mind me asking? I made some out of tshirt paint but after fishing it a few times the dots have broke free from the knots and now slide around all willy nilly like.
