Team Dead Drift Fly Masters Invitational
«
on:
March 04, 2011, 12:12:46 PM »
MAY 7, 2011
It will be a "hybrid" comp., and thus will be weighted on a scale of 85. Meaning, for every team competing, 85 points will be added to the total points available. If we have all slots filled (15 teams), points will break out like this:
Total points available: 1275 (85 x 15)
1st Place 638 (637.5 rounded up) per team (1/2 total available pts) Each member of that team will get 319 pts. (638/2)
2nd place 426 total, 213/team mate (total pts./3)
3rd, 318 total, 159/team mate (total pts./4)
and so on down the line till all points are accounted for.
This will be a FIPS fishing rules type competition. Its all about numbers of fish here, no big fish, or five fish comp.
To register please email:
thegeorgiafly@hotmail.com
or
flyfishatlanta@gmail.com
Name: Team Dead Drift Fly Masters Invitational at Frog Hollow-all teams, individuals are welcome to register for participation.
Competitors/Teams: Each team will be comprised of two anglers. Only one angler may fish at any given time. The angler that is not fishing may spot for the active angler. All active anglers must net their own fish, and pass the net/fish to the beat controller for measurement/scoring. At any time, the active angler may "tap" the inactive angler (spotting angler), at which time the active angler will become the spotter, and the spotter the active angler. When switching active angler positions, the active angler must announce that he/she has "tapped" the inactive angler, and the beat controller must acknowledge this position change.
Entry Fee: The entry fee for each team will be $75.00. (A team consists of two anglers)
Rule of Competition:
-This competition will follow the FIPS Mouche competition standards, with no exception. (Rules will be addressed during pre-comp. meeting). Each angler is expected to follow FIPS rules of competition, regardless of whether any specific topics/questions are addressed during the pre-comp. meeting.
Competition layout:
-Competition will be limited to 15 teams (30 total anglers)
-Teams will be divided into 3 separate flights (5 teams per flight) according to random draw, at the pre-comp. meeting.
-Once the random drawing has been completed, each team will be made aware of their flight, and beat assignments.
-Each flight will consist of five teams
-Each flight will consist of five beats.
-Each Flight will consist of 1 hour 30 minutes of total fishing time.
-The winning team from each flight will advance to the final round of fishing, which will determine the winner.
-Each Flight/Beat will be assigned a controller.
-Controllers will be members of the competitive field that are not engaged in the current round of fishing.
-Controllers will not "judge" on the same section of water in which they will compete.
-At the end of each session/flight, the winning team will be announced.
-At the end of each session/flight, each team will participate in the casting portion of the comp., and all team scores will be recorded to determine "wild card" placement in the final round.
-The casting course will consist of five targets, at varying distances.
-Each target will have three concentric rings, with the “bull’s eye measuring 2 feet in diameter, the second ring at 4 feet diameter, and the outer ring at 6 feet in diameter.
-Landing your yarn “fly” in the bull’s-eye will result in 300 points, the middle ring is 200 points, and the outer ring is 100 points
-In addition to the five course targets, there will be two bonus targets, each at a value of 300 points.
-Each competitor will have 1 minute to practice the course, and then 3 minutes to complete the course.
-Each competitor will be allowed three attempts at each target, any “ground tick” of the yarn fly will be considered an attempt, and no points will be awarded for that attempt.
-Upon beginning the accuracy course, the competitor must begin with fly in hand.
-The yarn fly must land in a scoring field and come to a complete stop, without the aid of the casting participant (no dragging the fly into a scoring zone)
-Each competitor will be allowed one attempt at each of the two bonus targets
-Once the competitor had finished the accuracy course, he/she will move to the distance portion of the casting session
-Each competitor will be allowed 1 minute to practice, and 3 minutes to cast their three longest casts. The longest cast of the distance portion will be the only cast recorded.
-Ground ticks will not be counted as an attempt in the distance portion of the casting session.
-The distance will be rounded to the next highest measurement, in ½” increments.
-The longest cast of each competitor will have a 5x multiplier
-The combined scores of each competitor in a team will be combined, and the team with the highest total score will be the casting winners, and advance to the final round of fishing (provided they have not already advanced as a result of their performance in the fishing sessions).
-All reels, and line for both the accuracy portion, and distance portion of the casting session will be provided, and will be standard across the competition field.
-Competitors will be limited to 9’ 5 wt. rods during the casting session(s)
-Competitors may use any rod that conforms to the FIPS Mouche competition standards for fishing sessions.
Flight Start/Finish Times and Controller info.:
-1st Flight will begin at 8 a.m., and will end at 9:30 a.m.
-1st Flight will be controlled by Flight #2
-Flight #3 will complete the casting portion of the comp. at this time
-2nd Flight will begin at 10:00 a.m., and will end at 11:30 a.m.
-2nd Flight will be controlled by Flight #3
-Flight #1 will complete the casting portion of the comp. at this time
-3rd Flight will begin at 12:00, and will end at 1:30 p.m.
-3rd Flight will be controlled by Flight #1

1st Round Results:
-1st Round results will be announced at 2:30 p.m., with winning teams from each flight advancing to the final fishing session.
-Winning team from the casting portion of the comp. will be announced, and will advance to the final fishing session
-Winning team with highest combined fishing and casting points, will be announced, and advance to the final fishing session. (If a team has the highest casting score, they will be eliminated for the drawing of the final "wild card" spot as they have already advanced as a result of their casting performance).
Final Round Fishing:
-The final Fishing session will start at 3:30, and end at 5:30
-The five teams advancing to the final fishing round will have the opportunity to select their final beats according to the combined fishing, and casting team points. The team with the highest combined score in the fishing round, and the casting round will have the first pick of their final beat, the second highest scoring team will pick second, and so forth.
Results:
-Results of each fishing round will be posted on the comp. leader board upon completion of each fishing session/flight.
-Results of each casting round will be posted on the comp. leader board upon completion of each casting session.
-The winning team will be the team with the greatest total fish points from the final round.
-No casting points, or previous fishing points will be carried over to the final round.

I'd love to fish it, but nobody likes me and I have no friends. If somebody else wants to fish it and they don't have a partner, let me know.
What date is it? I read it twice and didn't see a date or maybe it is there and I am blind.

I'm trying to get him to fish, but he's got some crazy schedules with his shows right now.
Ben, are you fishing the Big Pig this weekend?

I wish, but several from the team will be there, Scott Brown and Mark Adams. WIll you be there? I think I may ride up Sunday to watch if I can wipe out some much needed yardwork on Saturday.

It's a bit pricey and I'm not even at 50% since the elbow surgery, so it will have to be all lefty. I'm still weighing my options. If you go up there, hit a certain WMA stream that isn't too far away. I fished it last Sunday for an hour and wished I had more time.

Great Comp!
Congrats to Daniel and Mitchell, Corey and Jamie, Seth and Trent for placing respectively 1st,2nd, and 3rd. This was a great comp experience and I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We had quite a turnout of over 30 anglers, and around 15 spectators. I was very pleased with how everything ran and how everyone fished. Great to spread the gospel down south!

As a team member of Dead Drift, I'd like to thank Ben and Derek for running a really smooth and efficient comp. Everything was on time and there wasn't any confusing moments for any of the competitors or controllers. As someone who is new to the comp fishing, I had a blast and learned a great deal. Did good on the casting comp with room for more improvement, and I was less amped on the water than I thought I'd be. I only caught 2 fish, but I had a beat that didn't produce a lot of numbers so I was pleased with how Scott and I fished it. Can't wait for the next one. As a side note, I've yet to meet a competitive fly fisherman that wasn't just a great person and generous in sharing their knowledge. It's great to be part of this fraternity.

I think it was Terrence who helped me with that maneuver up in Quebec not so many years ago.
Ben, relay that story you told me about "taking one for the team".
