Comp legal caddis hooks
« on: December 11, 2009, 09:58:05 PM »
Can anyone recommend a site where I can get some.  I ordered some TMC 2487's from Mountain River Fly Shop but they were out of stock.

Any hook can be made competition legal by completely crimping down the barb.  However, anyone seriously considering spending valuable time and money in the competitive circuit will only use hooks from the "preferred" list:

Preferred Hooks:
- Knapeks (pronounced Ka-nap-eks) are widely trusted
- Grips have been widely used, but are thin wire and apt to bend out on larger fish
- Dohikus  cost an arm and a leg
- Certain Kamasan hooks are still trusted even in light of today's small "barbless boom" (B175)
- TMC SPBL 2499, w/ other varieties like the 100 needing manipulation
- Skalka makes a good hook in the larger diameter variety

You can find many of them here:
http://www.flytyingspecialties.com/

If you don't want to spend the money on any of those hooks just use what you have or can find.  I was using crimped down Mustads when I first started. I got by and actually had some success, but it definitely lost me PLENTY of fish!

I really like the Mustad Signature Series C49S.  My concern is how closely is the hook inspected?  I'd hate to get dq'ed for not having a barb completely crimped.

You'll be fine.  Don't sweat it too much.  Just crimp and test it on something.

I use barbless hooks now, but when I crimped barbs I always gave them the shirt test in front of my judge.

Just stick them in your shirt, and pull them out.  I've never had a judge test a barb after doing this myself.

Any hook can be made competition legal by completely crimping down the barb....

FYI....

Proposed change on hooks in 28.7 constitutes a step towards the use of hooks manufactured as barbless in the championships organized after the next General Assembly (2011). Such regulation had been proposed by the Team Captains several times during FIPS-Mouche championships and discussed with the Captains at the Championships in Finland in 2007 and in Spain in 2008. However the general opinion favours the use of hooks which are originally barbless, competitors still have large collections flies made on barbed hooks. For the interim period, to allow the competitors replace their fly stocks, flies tied on originally barbed hooks can still be used, providing the barbs are completely removed (filed flat).
