Crawdaddy
« on: August 17, 2010, 09:15:42 AM »
Hey guys, I was wondering... I know of an old timer that has taken more big browns at night than I care to think about.  He has a room full of pictures and graphite mounts that would make your head spin.  My reason for dropping this info is that he said inside the fish he did keep back in the day, they were all completely full of crawfish.  Now you can see where I'm going here.  My night forays have been based around harvey style pusher flies and large woolhead/ deerhead scuplin patterns.  I want to add a simple, reliable, yet passable crawdad pattern to the box.  I know that this isn't really part of the comp scene, but it is something I have developed a more than serious interest in, so I figured I'd throw it out there.

Take a look a Kelly Galloups twin tail madonna. I know in his video he said he has used it as a crawfish and at night it would definitly pass. Pretty sweet easy to tie streamer.

I have a nymph pattern that I use as an anchor for high water conditions.  The fish on penns seem to be more responsive to it than a vladi worm in high to blown out conditions.  You tie it just like a wooly bugger but with a crawfish colored fox squirrel tail.  I tie it on a size 6 streamer hook but you could tie them smaller if you wanted.  If you are targeting trophy fish maybe go larger to a size 4.  You could use it as a streamer if you wanted to but I find it more effective to dead drift it.  I will post a picture of it tonight it some point.

Thanks guys.  I would like to see a pic of that pattern bill.  It sounds sick.  Nick, its funny you mentioned that Galloup pattern because I am a huge fan of his stuff.  In certain instances I feel that it is okay to throw something big because I am really only targeting one or two fish a night, and you need something that- number 1; moves a ton of water, and no. 2, has a ton of movement.  I became a believer when I was blessed enough to fish with Mr. Humphreys on a night excursion.  Post that pic Bill!

Pictures are blurry because I took them with my phone.  I think you will be able to get the general idea.
