Great fly and tutorial!  I have been using the Gen X dubbing for a while now, and couldn't be happier with the results. It just adds a dimension that hackle or dubbing (guard hair spikes) can't accomplish. It's ALIVE!!!

Thanks!

Yes I do like the gen-x too, the stuff for the legs in this video are sold seperately (g-x wigglys).  They are merely the mini rubber legs seperated from the dubbing.  Those mini rubber legs have aided in the creation of several micro patterns from my vise.  I have actually made a really productive mini rubberlegs pattern out of them for the early season brown and black small and micro stones with that stuff.   Clutch materials make great patterns.

Rich,

Do you prefer to use the wigglys separate from the dubbing in most cases, as opposed to just using the Gen-X dubbing?  I have only used the pre-mix on my flies. I apologize in advance if this has been addressed in the video, as I have only seen it with the audio off (at work).

Dejon made a good point when we were on the water last summer, that the Gen-X dubbing slows the nymph's descent (too much bulk). I have not dove into the heavily weighted flies with tungsten heads yet so bulk has not really been an issue in my tying/fishing.  I can say that I have done very well with many "traditional" nymphs with Gen-X thoraxes (is that the plural for thorax?).

Adam,
I have used both, with the dubbing and without, and I find I prefer to use just the micro rubber legs and add them in.  I am not as scientific in my approach as some of the guys on here so I cannot tell you what I think about the time it takes the fly to hit bottom.  What I will say is, if you think for some reason it impedes the sinking process, then do one of two things, either dub it more sparsely or add more weight to counteract this problem.  If you watch most of my videos and understand my approach to flyfishing it's pretty easy.  Keep it simple.  The most problematic common attribute that I see with people getting into this sport is the tendency to over complicate things.  This to me is counterproductive and drastically lengthens the learning curve.  Perfect example; latin terminology in reference to insects, I'll admit it, I do it from time to time, mixing the latin with the common names.  Keep it simple, size 18 olives on the water today, match it with the appropriate fly.  Do the fish really care if its a pseodo or a baetis?  Sure, its cool to impress your fishing friends with this nomenclature but in the grand scheme of things it aint worth a dam to the fisherman.  I also am from the school of thought of what may work for you may not always work for me.  On the flipside, I will listen to anything and everything someone has to tell me about something, however I will make my own assumptions about it after I run it through the acid test.

Everyone has opinions on technique, method and what they think on just about every aspect of this sport.  I figured most of the riddles on my home waters out through trial and error and from reading.  Sorry for the rant, I got carried away.

I like the idea and it looks like a deadly fly.  I am sure it sinks pretty quick even with the legs.  I bet it works great as a pupa imitation with all that movement.

Thanks for the insight Rich. So, what is the proper name of the caddis you were tying in the video?  ;)

You guys can call it whatever you like, hey it works.  I got a pretty cool wired fly that I am working out a name for.   Thought about an 80's-90's heavy metal theme: Holy Diver, Metal Militia or the Iron Maiden.....(obviously having some fun with this).

Hey, back on track here, to be quite honest with you it's really tough finding "fresh" innovation in flytying.  It's pretty much already been done for the most part.  We are merely limited to the materials that we have at hand, there is really only so much you can do with materials and a hook.  That is the true limiting factor. Mix it up, try something a bit different, works for me. ;)
