What flies should I be tying this winter?

Depends on what type of fishing you will be doing. Also depends on where you will be fishing. Whatever flies you are low on, and lots of nymphs.  I've been stocking up on heavy flies for euro nymphing and I stocked up on some dries.

I'd suggest tying and experimenting with Czech Nymphs and other bombs, as you can always purchase or tie the others as need be, but a good anchor is hard to come by at most fly shops...

I've been trying to "expand" my euro nymphs.
I see many variations of colors.
Not sure what colors to tie.

I think various shades of the basics like olive, gray, tan, brown, and black should suit you fine what you prefer for body material is up to you. Tie some with biot/quill bodies and some sparsely dubbed.  Check out Loren's site he breaks down micro nymphs and hot spots and that should get the juices going on the sub #16 stuff.  For anchor work I'm very partial to polish woven and czech nymphs. It's just what I'm comfortable fishing.  I do have vladis and woven stones in the box also.

Don't count out your regular nymphs with added weight or tungsten heads.

Welcome to the site!  If you weren't aware Jermiah will be competing against you at the upcoming Nationals - that's why he'll be passing his secrets on after :_

I'd suggest standard Buzzers, Boobies, and Estaz Buggers, but I'm sure you're probably well off in those departments.

There are some really good starting places here.  Also, remember standard jigs aren't allowed in competition.

If you are referring to our Canadian National Fly Fishing Championships, then yes, I will be competing at our NFFC, as a member of Team Cormorant (same team I was on last year).

I have qualified and had been selected for this year's WFFC in Poland, but won't be attending that competition due to the dates/timing of the event, which conflicts with my youngest son's high school graduation ceremonies. As I mentioned before: I wouldn't even for a moment think of missing the chance to see him graduate and receive his diploma...

I had a similar conflict of schedules last year, which required me to stay home and miss our team's week of practice (in order to attend my older son's graduation) and then to fly out to Scotland and the WFFC the night before the 1st session of the WFFC. I missed the opening ceremonies, official practice sessions, and had absolutely zero practice time before my first session (I competed less than 12 hours after landing).

After that experience, I vowed that I would never consider attending ANY competition unless I felt comfortable with the amount of time that I had to mentally and physically prepare, and to climatize to the differences in their time-zone (experienced some major jet-lag for the first few days)...

I really wish our team could pull it together to send a squad, but were just a bit too young.  We will most certainly be at next years though.  Really looking forward to it and I hope it moves back east.

Walleye were classified as an elligible species at the first NFFC. The general idea is to give competitors a variety of fish, which in turn could possibly help them to prepare for the sort of experiences and challenges that they might expect to encounter when competing at the international level on foreign soil.

Haven't heard if they have committed yet, but FFC will likely allow two international teams to compete at this year's NFFC (the British Military Fly Fishing Team has already sent confirmation).

I don't waste my time tying dries anymore. 80-90 percent of a fishes diet is taken under the surface. Of course there may be ones that disagree with me. Thats a-OK.
