Hydrodynamic Nymphs..
« on: August 13, 2011, 06:28:00 PM »
Here is a pattern I have been tying and fishing with success throughout the spring and summer months.

Quill and Sulphur Nymph

Hook: Hanak H200BL (Size 12-16), (TMC 100SPBL for Size 18<)
Bead: Black Tungsten
Thread: Body - Colour of Choice, Thorax - Fl. White UTC 70
Tail: Coq de Leon
Body: Tying thread (UTC 70 or 140)
Rib: Stripped Peacock Herl
Thorax: Sulphur-Orange "Nymph Dubbing"
Epoxy: Bug-Bond Lite and One coat of varnish

Hopper Yellow/SLF Squirrel

Red/Sulphur, Red/Squirrel

Brown/Sulphur

Outstanding. Those dogs will hunt. I think those would be a great pattern down here on the Hooch. Might tie a couple and try them out.

Andy do you typically use black beads on those flies because i have never had any luck with black beads.  Maybe I don't use them under the correct conditions.  Is there a certain time you fish black.

For the most part, my nymphs are usually tied with a gold/gunmetal tungsten faceted bead, or black tungsten.  When fishing low water on sunny days, the black seems to out perform the gold faceted, however the gun metal seems to be the "happy medium" for most conditions.  I personally really like how a black bead looks on most caddis and mayfly nymphs as it gives that 'over exagerated' feature of the nymphs head and a nice contrast to the fly.

I like the 'blackish' heads myself.  Especially on more presured waters.  They still stand out nicely, but with a greater subtley (that is, highly visible but with less flash).

Ive used them myself but not many fish.  I used them under the same approach during bright and clear days.  I will give them another try.  Probably like another post touched on, I didn't use them with much confidence. Thanks for the info.

Nice flies.  I have been using this style a lot this year and another trick I do is make them in 2 bead sizes to bead able to fish them better in different water types.  Also some with brass beads is a good idea.  I also tie them on jig hooks and have good success.  As far a bead color I like copper are unfinished.

Thanks for sharing Andy. I am going to tie some of what you posted color wise and test them out.

In your opinion do you find that the bug bond and varnish on the abdomen help these flies cut the water column better...I've been giving this technique some thought and I would think it would cause less resistance being the abdomen is complete smooth....is this your reasoning behind the finished abdomen or just to protect the thread and peacock ribbing?

It's all about angles. A good angle creates a good presentation which in turn puts more fish in the net.

Brandon, you hit the nail on the head there man.  I've done sink tests with un-varnished/bug bonded and bugbond nymphs and the bug-bond version sinks much quicker (and also ads loads of durability to the fragile quill rib and fly of course).

I've noticed the same.  It's amazing how much materials will affect sink rate.  Example: a single BB split shot will sink exponentially faster alone, not just a little IMO, than one with a wad of dubbing crimped in it's grasp. Why?  Same weight or even more... but different profile/bouncy.

You bet.  I've been overthinking fly sinkability so much I've even been considering giving this stuff a try.  Hareline's "Quick Decent Dubbing".  Apparently it holds less water/sinks faster than other dubbings?

I have tried it.  It is really just fine steel wool type fiber.  It adds weight but I am not sold on it yet.

Andy,

I have used that dubbing a bit, usually for sunken spinners.  I learned about it from John Barr.  It is aluminum fiber and dubs tightly.  It does not produce a very buggy fly, however.

I've had a lot of success this summer/fall with the black matte beads and silver nickle. I've tended to use gold or silver in stained water. That being said, I did do well this summer with silver beads on stocker fish.
