polish nymph/woven fly thread...post em up!
« on: October 29, 2009, 06:23:43 PM »
Was trying to take a good picture of a blend I made using Kevins process of collecting only guard hairs but I managed a horribly dark photo that shows little to no detail of the blend.  However, it is a good photo of a polish woven nymph using the shuttle weave.

Hook: size 12 partridge fine wire
bead: 3mm tungsten copper
body: olive and chartreuse uni stretch yarn
collar: hare and uv black

I use a smaller version of this fly quite often on our shallow freestones and it is a producer.

Very nice fly. They can be a real pain to make. Have you ever tried adding a copper rib? You definitly don't need it but it adds a nice look. I'll try to get a decent pic and post it. Either way very nice fly.

I use it a lot on the nymphs without the uni stretch the uni stretch i apply super glue to the underbody and it seems to hold fairly well.  On nymphs without uni stretch i use copper wire.

purple and chartreuse...great color combo..shhh

Very cool! Have you ever tried embroidery floss? It come in a million colors and is super cheap. I cut the length I want and then peel out 3 strands for larger flies and 2 for smaller flies.

Good stuff guys!  I especially like that hook - nice long offset shank.  Do you find it to be a good fish sticker?

these are awesome flies.  they work great as anchors.  ive been trying to find another way to tie them without shuttle weaving.  I use Uni yarn... not the stretch stuff.   maybe the extra stretch will make tying them a little easier.  I just hate flies that are not super evenly wove.  I tried twisting a couple strands of yarn tight and wrapping with some interesting results.

Blacklabel-I have not tried the embroidery floss yet although I hear I need to!

Dejon- I just got these hooks and haven't fished them yet although they look very promising :)

Cluster- Yeh i definately get some uneven weaves that bug me to death, I like the overhand weave but have been on a mission to try and get this shuttle weave down

Riverdaze- Just checked out that pattern, can't believe I missed it!  Definately like the look of the regular uni yarn.  That weave looks friggin perfect ;D

Those look great, Tod.   What are you using to weave those, floss?  Is that scud back over the top?

FFPA- I use UNI-Yarn for my weaves.  I've found that it is easier to weave with two bobbins then to hold the material in your hands.   It's all about even pressure.

It took me a while to get decent at these.  For practice, I would weave a fly, unweave it, and weave it again, until I had things looking good.

Those Polish Nymphs are amazing Todd! Wow. I really need to learn how to tie those woven bodies, they just look "right".

I see that you are using those "Nymph Head" beads, what is your opinion on those? Do the little eye bumps make a difference? They definitely make the fly look more appealing to the fisherman, but have you noticed a difference with the fish?

Diggity! There's more weaves there than the official Pimps&Hoes ball in Chicago!

I'm not sure they are nymph heads - I think it's just glare.  Impressive display.  Might have inspired me to go do some polish nymphs... nah - i'm too lazy to weave:)

I thought it was a small stick on prizm eye with UV knot on it! Either way it got the juices flowing in me, I have yet to attempt a weave until today. Off subject but a bead on a streamer with stick on prizm eye's and UV knot....Hm!Hm!

Sorry Rob, we're gonna need a lot of beer and some serious basement time to get those bugs figured out.  ;)

I was thinking Uni-yarns is the way to go espically for starting out. Thanks Rip.

I am also like D I get lazy and would rather tie a dozen standard Czech nymphs in an hour than maybe get one out of 12 weaved flies to look good.

Is Uni-yarn similar to wee-wool?

Heres a pic of a woven nymph tied with embroidery floss. Olive back and an orange underside is popular one for me. I use Kaufmann SLF for the colar this one is in tan stone. I also like the painted black tungsten beads on my woven nymphs although I do have my fair share is gold and copper. Weaving is all about tons of practice but like Chris said you can just undo the weave and do it over and over on the same fly until your good at it.

Oh man, I have like 8,000 lifetimes worth of that embroidery thread. I gotta try this weaving, it just looks so cool (even cooler when attached to the inner lip of a brown). Thanks for the inspiration everyone.
