Red Fox Dubbing
« on: November 11, 2009, 09:51:09 AM »
So I have a full red fox hide that my Dad processed for me.  Do you guys know any good patterns that it can be used for?  I know a few but I figured with the caliber of guys on here I am missing a few flies that I would never hav thought of.

The orginal Hendrickson called for either fawn fox belly fur or urine stained fox belly fur from a vixen fox. Maybe this isn't the answer you wanted? :o :o

I knew that one and I will be tying a few of the original Hendricksons.  I may cut some strips of fur and make some bunny type leeches.

I think it was Red Fox dubbing that Jeremy Allan was using to tie his "provo stone". Which looked more like a cross between a stone and a crayfish - it was a killer. I'd get the blender out and start mixing up some packs.

If the hide is in good shape and the tan job was done well SELL IT!! You can buy a ton of material to include a pack of Hendrickson dubbing!

LOL its in great shape but I trap fox so this one was designated for dubbing when the fur market crashed last year.

I'm on the road passing time.  Please don't give me a hard time using my laptop when I'm driving.  By saying that I guess I'm asking for a hard time.  Here is a productive pattern that I have taken steelhead, bass and trout on.  I tie a variation of this on a streamer hook with a bead head.

I am sure I will come up with a few patterns and one that i really want to tie is a good crayfish pattern.  The red/orange color in a blend should end up being deadly.

Yeah i have got a cool Idea for one using the tail for the pinchers and the redder fur for the body.  I am not sure what to use for the over case or back yet.

In the past I have used flexible drinking straws the colour I wanted or simply used a permanent marker to achieve the desired effect

Here's a pattern that is very similar to the one that I tie:

Hook: Salt water short shank, #4.
Thread: Clear monofilament.
Tail: Orange Polar Fibre covered with a few strands of red Fluoro Fibre and then covered with orange bucktail.
Weight: Jan Siman flat lead (on the first quarter of the hook shank behind the eye).
Underfeelers: Bucktail, orange.
Eyes: Burnt 20kg monofilament, eyes darkened with permanent marker.
Feelers: Stripped pheasant feathers painted with orange nail varnish.
Hackle: Saddle hackle, orange.
Body: Chenille, orange.
Carapace or shell back:  Drinking straw painted with orange Heritage glass stain.

You can also use shellback material and mono ribbing to achieve a similar effect:

Hope this helps...
