Secret Flies
« on: December 09, 2009, 05:18:51 PM »
Saw this pattern in the book that Jan Siman is now selling

The pattern in the book is tied on a slightly different style hook giving it a longer abdomen, however, I do like the look of the fly on the knapek scud

Hook: Knapek Scud size 16
Tail: Brown Rooster fibers
Body: Red tying thread
Rib 1: Stripped peacock herl
Rib 2: Xsm copper wire
Wingcase: Black biot
Thorax: Dubbing blend of uv dubs
Bead: tungsten copper

Nice tie Josh.  I like the look of that dubbing blend.

Can you share the name of that book?

It's pretty pricey for a pattern database though :-\

Great fly post Josh!  That fly really stands for the whole genre of new nymphs people are using in competition today:

1)Diminutive tail
2)Thread Body
3)Double Rib
4)Complex Dub Mix for Thorax equaling length of Tungsten Bead
5)Slim Body Profile
6)Short Shanked Body

Thanks Dejon!

The one thing that I dislike is that they are time consuming...having to build a tapered body, tie in 2 ribs then wrapping one rib and trying to put the 2nd rib in the correct place...give me some super glue and biots so I can call it a day :)

or just one rib so I don't have to cuss at my fly while I'm tying it

Here is the link to the book
http://shop.siman.cz/index.html?pod=/_book_sf.htm

The fly I'm trying to copy is on the first link

Wow! That's awesome.  The resolution on those fly pics is superb - you can really zoom in and see all the little details.

Thank you, this has actually fine tuned some of my recent inner thinking.

So as some of my buddies know my dog drug off my boat bag to chew on somewhere in never never land.  In it was my main comp boxes....I know I know.  Ive been begging borrowing and stealing flies just to fish for that day let alone the comps that are fast approaching.  Josh is our team tyer (damn good one too)  And as he knows I raid his fly box for buggy stuff and use them right before comps.  With that said, I need 30 dozen of those.....Thanks josh.

I don't know if they catch fish any better than regular PTs, but this is one impressive looking fly:

The abdomen is absolutely sick. Has anybody used lacquer on flies before? Is there a certain type you should use?

I second that query!  I've used epoxy, but I don't think it finishes the same.

For the lacquer try Sally Hansen hard as nails. This is great clear nailpolish. try 2 or 3 coats.
I use it for everything at the tying bench. Also try other colors to change the color of tung beads. This saves a bunch of coin.

panhead.
