Super Simple Sulfur Nymph #1
« on: July 10, 2010, 09:33:52 PM »
Hey guys,

seeing as how it applies to all of the fisherman on here, I figured I would post a link to one of my killers lately.  Got another one on the way in the next day or two.  Easy to tie and deadly, enjoy.

Nice tie rich. I'm a big fan of simple... maybe that's why I'm listening to more and more country these days.

Country eh?  Hey, what ever floats your boat.  Here is #2, a bit different in style but just as effective.

I just watched your video Rich.  They are great as always.  I'm a big fan of your videos and also of simplicity.  If I omitted the tails on your nymphs would it make much of a difference if any?  Wondering what your thoughts are...like I said I like simple.

Rich,

Those are good videos.

In my book, both of those flies might as well be a Frenchie.  You know how you can kind of cross your eyes a bit and blur your vision?  That's how I look at the difference between flies.  If two nymphs look the same when they're just a little blurry, then IMHO, they might as well be the same fly and I'm sure not carrying both.  With that bit of blur, then both your suphers and the Frenchie look identical.

But I still call the Frenchies in my box BHPTs just out of stubbornness I suppose.   Certainly the main difference there is the hotspot, not the Coq de Leon tail --- and the hot spot is a HUGE difference maker.

Again though, as always, the videos look great.  I just think they are essentially (in terms of how they'd fish)  a couple Frenchies.

Enjoy the day.

Dom,

hey thanks for the insight.....  I think?   Maybe I will scrap them seeing as how that is how they are perceived.  Thanks for the input.

Don't scrap them.  I think they're just fine and will certainly help anglers out there.

Rich,

I really like the fly it merges what you see in a frenchie and some of the run of the mill sulphur nymphs.  The buggie nature of the ties sets them apart from the frenchies in my part.  Great ties if you ask me and I will be adding a few to my box for when sulphur time starts next year in PA.  I bet they would work well with a more yellowish hot shot to.

Rich ,

I tied a few and went out yesterday to a local tailwater and caught several fish on them.  Good flies, I wouldn't scrap them either!

Man, sometimes it's like you have to walk on eggshells around here to express a differing opinion.  Sarcasm noted.  I don't suggest that you scrap them, and yeah, I bet they catch a TON of fish.  Like I said, I enjoy the videos and I've gotten some ideas from them.  Thanks for taking the time to post them.  Yes, it helps out a lot of guys.

To put it another way; let's say the fishing was slow .....  I guess I'm wondering if you guys would change out a Frenchie and put on these Sulphers and expect any different result?  Is the difference from PT to same color dubbing of any real significance, especially in sizes 14 or smaller, and especially when the prominent features of all three flies in question is the bead and the hotspot?

Enjoy the day.

I tied one yesterday (had a hell of a time splitting the thread) but I like the bugginess of it.  We don't have any sulfurs around here but I think it will make a great attractor bug.

I find there are times when a size 18 hot spot black zebra midge will out fish a size 18 hot spot black baetis nymph and vice versa.  Almost identical as far as size and materials, but slightly different in form.  I find the "bugginess" of dubbing to really be a fish catcher... especially when things get slow or difficult.   As you've mentioned though I wouldn't carry both Frenchies and the "SSS", but I might switch to the latter as a slight improvement on the first.

Chris,
If you are having trouble splitting thread use the touch dubbing method instead.  Extra tacky wax is a plus.

Tim, I almost gave up and busted out the high-tack SWAX but I persisted.  Success!

What's your guys preferred method for splitting the thread?  Eventually I went with a sewing needle.

The sewing needle works, but I would recommend dulling the point a little with wet and dry sandpaper. The sharp point will sometimes cut the thread, rather than separate it. I use a home made bodkin (needle set in a piece of dowelling). I unwind the thread fully and take all the tension off of it--in fact I sort of push it together to relax the fibres even more. I support the loose fibres from behind with a finger and gently work the (blunted) needle through the rough centre.

It works a lot better with multi-strand threads like Pearsall's Gossamer and the heavier wound Benecchi. These threads are actually made up of even finer threads, so they split easily.

No sarcasm Dom, seriously though, and you don't need to walk on eggshells, I just don't want to put up garbage content thats all, and I welcome the criticism, no worries.  ;)   I think that it can be all the difference on some days.  I have had days where I have fished both a frenchie and this sulfur side by side, flipping them through positions in the rig and somedays the sulfur wins and other days the frenchie wins.  It's just another bullet in the chamber as I like to phrase it.

On another note, the split thread deal can be done with even the UTC 70 thread but it is much easier with the 140 as it is a bit larger.  It does take some practice and the suggestions given in the forum are all good ones.  I just try to minimize having to put down tools while tying for speed and find that the end of a pair of standard scissors can split the thread nicely.  The touch dub technique is also a good one too, but in this case I really like the effect that is achieved from the sparsely dubbed rope where the orange in the thread shines through.  I have done them in bright yellow too but for some reason the orange is much more productive.  Just my 2 cents
