Clarification of the fishing regs at the gorge; fishing IS permitted from March 21 to April 9 (8:00 AM) on a catch & release basis. I fished there today and this is the info posted there. By the way, the water level was excellent, temp 38 degrees, midges coming off, and the fish were biting.
I'm bummed, I live about 30 minutes away but can't make the comp since I'll be in Oklahoma City shooting in a two day match that weekend. I hope everyone enjoys fishing the KLG, it's a terrific piece of water.

hmm, thanks Dave. I got that information from the NJ site too. Maybe it was an older link. I was heading there Friday to check out the water looks like I'll bring my gear.

How far along are they with the road reconstruction? Can you go through to the bridge lot, or can you go beyond now?

Daniel, if we don't get too much rain tomorrow, you should have some good fishing on Fri. Good news, the water level does drop very quickly there.
Re the road; it looks like nothing has been done, but I parked in the lower lot and walked up to the middle lot. That section of the road is closed, tho it isn't nearly as heavily damaged as the upper section. I'll check out the upper section tomorrow, but it has been closed due since the hurricane. It's hard for me to imagine how much water must have come thru there to tear up the road like that. I've fished there since the mid-1950s and have never seen the road in such bad condition as now. Over the summer I did see some people that appeared to be surveying the situation but unfortunately i had a senior moment and didn't talk to them to get any info.

I usually park at the lower section as well. You are dead on about not even fathoming how much water came through there. Should make for a great competition venue. Too bad you can't make it. If all goes well, maybe I'll host one in fall or spring next year.

Fished that one time, that has some serious pocketwater and good fishing. Wish I could make it.

KLG up-date; I checked out the upper stretch (middle parking lot to upper parking area), and a little fishing (I did catch a few fish just downstream from the upper parking area). The upper road is absolutely impassable, no change since the hurricane tore up the road. I spoke to someone at Shannon's shop and he had no idea of what was going on with the road. Maybe someone from KL Chapter of TU would have some info (?).
Daniel, the water dropped from yesterday so if you go tomorrow, take a rod with you. I'll be at Somerset all day Fri & Sat, helping out at the Bayshore Saltwater Flyrodders booth and trying to not spend too much $$$$ on stuff I don't need.....

Hey guys I just wanted to give you an update-

This event will be going on as planned. I will update the team information later tonight.

I also have an idea to take basic fly donations (wooly bugger, green weenie, san juan worm, hare's ear etc) from competitors for youth fly fishing in the area. I am thinking a few flies from each person would fill a couple boxes, and that would be donated to the local Trout Unlimited chapters and their pursuits to expand the youth participation in our sport. Again- I'll keep you posted.

Okay-

I spoke with a local Trout Unlimited Chapter and received a contact within the state that is running a youth fly fishing camp in NJ this summer.

My idea is to have anyone willing, tie a few basic patterns to fill a couple boxes of basic flies that will help them catch trout in our area.

Here are the 6 patterns:

1. Wooly Worm
2. Wooly Bugger
3. Green Weenie
4. San Juan Worm
5. Hare's Ear Nymph
6. Caddis Pupa

This basic selection will catch trout (along with a lot of warmwater species) in any river or lake.

My goal is to fill at least 3 small boxes.

Brandon Matthews contacted me and generously said he would like to help and would tie basically all of the wooly worms needed.

If anyone else would like to tie any 1 specific fly, let me know. Or if you want to help tie a few of each, just send me a private message and we'll work out the details.

I can tie all of the Wooly Buggers or Caddis Pupas. I'll choose if/once I hear from anyone else.

The donations will go towards the following-

Each year the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife runs a Coldwater Conservation School for about 30 kids, it is 4 day 3 night event for kids between the ages of 11-14.

During the course of this school they learn about aquatic insects, matching the hatch to their flies, fly tying, fly casting, seining and electrofishing, stream restoration and more. They fish before, in between, and after most of the course work so it is without question that they must go through a bunch of flies.

It will take place June 28th-July 1st up in Stokes State Forrest (great area for it, many good trout waters up there).

I'm going to take donations up through June so don't feel the need that you have to rush. I think this is one great cause, and would have loved to participate in something like this when I was younger because I fell into this sport alone and was pretty much self taught.

Hey Daniel,
Just wanted to let you know that I am going to have to drop out of this comp. Some scheduling issues came up and I will no longer be able to make the trip up.
I apologize for dropping out.

This past Monday they put in 1,800 fish (even split between brookies and rainbows). As of now the water is quite low, hopefully we'll get some rain to bring the water level up.
