Streamer fishing for competitions
« on: June 10, 2011, 09:22:38 PM »
I was wondering if anyone fishes streamers in competitive situations.  Forgive me for being ignorant of the rules...but when I really want to get some fish...and dont feel like dicking around with the technicalities of euro setups...I throw streamers.  anyone?

I can't comment on the competition side, but there is a thread entitled "competition worthy streamers" i believe, with a lot of people saying their favorite patterns.

Rob,

Streamers are a very important part of the competition puzzle.  Sinktips and big streamers are an obvious choice in stained/blown water but there are many other times when using streamers will pull fish that nymphing strategies won't like: fish hugging deep structure and stocked fish more enticed by an active presentation rather than a dead drift.  Not to mention pulling streamers on lakes is an absolute staple.  Not all streamer action is subsurface either; I've skittered small streamers and used unweighted buggers almost like beetles: slapping them down in tangled brushy structure to entice bass like reaction strikes.

A time and place for everything.

There are some youtube videos out there of competitors fishing streamers in normal flows at the World Championships.  And a good article on how the Czech Youth team utilizing double streamer setups.

"Rod tip down" is a streamer technique I never utilized before comp fishing.  Using a rod you don't mind beating up can ease the pain a bit, but you literally stab the rod tip to the stream bottom and crawl your streamers back across the bottom - deadly effective in the right conditions.

The video that accompanies Fly Fishing and Fly Tying II, by Jaromir Karafiat and Miroslav Machacek has some streamer footage in it.  I thought there was footage from the World's or Euro Nationals posted on YouTube as well.
