coop Releases "Rules & Regs"
« on: February 01, 2010, 06:10:39 PM »

The TroutLegend Competitive Fly Fishing League is proud to announce the release of their official "Ranking System Rules & Regulations" Guidelines.  These statutes will govern the ranking of competitors participating in TroutLegend officially sanctioned fips-mouche style competitions.

We are confidant these guidelines along with a new network of "coop" competitions will help to grow and foster the sport of competitive fly fishing in North America.

Event Organizers, if you have an event that you would like to be considered for the TroutLegend Ranking System please fill out and submit the "Event Proposal" Document found here: http://troutlegend.com/coop/download .

A big thank to the league members of http://www.flyfishingteamnc.com/, http://www.teamstonefly.com/, and Team TroutLegend for your continued support.  2010 is shaping up to be one of the best years for "open registration" competitive fly fishing yet!

The TroutLegend Fly Fishing League is always seeking new membership teams. If you have an existing team, would like to form a new team, or need any help in supporting this cause in your area please feel free to contact us at: league@troutlegend.com

I was talking to Dave Pehle of the America Cup, and he'd love to see a western team join the cooperative.  There's a ton of talent out west...if you guys combined forces you'd be tough to beat!

I agree.  If comps are what keep us sharp lets get some rolling.  Its hard to beat a team of guys working together towards one common goal.

We should be adding several very shortly as our team has several big comps we do every year.

I think it's just a matter of time before a few western teams pop up.  If for no other reason they can't let us eastern boys steal all the spot light :)

My team has just begun planning our comps for this year. With a little luck we'll be staging 3 open call competitions.  Possible venues might be the Adirondacks, Western PA, and Catskill region.  I'm also toying with the idea of staging one here in Western New York with half on a picky little wild trout stream like the wiscoy and half on a big stocked system like the upper Catt.

While we're on the subject of rules (taken in context from the other thread on rules), I thought I'd ask for clarification as to whether the competitions have to conform to FIPS-Mouche rules to be eligible for the Trout Legend Ranking System Rules & Regulations (and I ask this with all due respect).

I ask this question, as I never considered the concept of a cash prize reward when I set the plans and ground-work for the B.C. Loch-Style Fly Fishing Championships, as offering a cash reward would have clearly violated FIPS-Mouche rules, guidelines and its "Olympic ideals", and would have prohibited it from being classified or being promoted as a FIPS-Mouche-style competition or championship.

Here's a few articles from FIPS-Mouche's Competition Rules that made me reconsider offering a financial prize or reward:

ARTICLE 1:
1.1. Sport fishing is angling with rod and line, by amateur anglers, for no financial reward.
1.2. Competition sport fishing is angling among competitors, who are observing a standard, approved set of rules, for no financial reward.
1.3. Competition sport fly fishing is angling with a conventional fly rod, fly line, fly reel and artificial flies among competitors who are observing a standard, approved set of rules, for no financial reward.

You see what I mean. This has been set as the first article for a reason. I look forward to your thoughts and ideas on this subject...

Cheers,
Todd

Good question Todd.  In an attempt to be inclusive to existing and forming competitions in North America we've utilized the fips-mouch rule set as a general guideline, but not bible.

Speaking to cash prizes (or equivalents); we are leaving that up to individual competition organizers.  One big deciding factor was the knowledge that many high level (national, regional) fly fishing events in Europe and the world at large award cash prizes.  Also noting the distinction: FipsMouche World Championships are indeed the "Olympics of Fly Fishing"... the TroutLegend League is 1 step below that level.

The primary criteria for rating TroutLegend Sanctioned Competitions has to do with A) Conforms to basic "competition" parameters (not allowed: fish anywhere, non judged events, etc), and B) "Rigor" (# of days, # of venues, # of participants, total fishing time per angler, and "Fips-Mouch-ness").

Much time, thought, and debate was put into this decision.  And I think it's a good one for the future of competitive fly fishing in this part of the world.

I doubt the majority of competitors are in it for the cash prize. It is a nice way of rewarding people for traveling and participating in comps. With gas prices what they are, I'm sure the top three guys appreciate a little cash to offset the travel expenses to get there. It also is a slight incentive for people to travel a little farther to compete. I know I enjoyed meeting the guys from some of the other teams at the last comp I competed in.
