Dette Fly Shop
« on: April 08, 2011, 10:52:50 AM »
Any of you NY boys been to Dette's Fly Shop? What is it like? Nice shop? Good people?

Let me know. I'm suppose to send up some flies samples up for a commercial job..but I like to know a little bit about the shop first...and since it's in NY and I'm in PA I can't really just stop in.

Thanks guys.

It's all about angles. A good angle creates a good presentation which in turn puts more fish in the net.

I grew up in NY and kick myself for never fishing that area. I finally went up there last year while staying at the in-laws in Allentown. I normally take my annual trip to Penns, but it was in a drought condition. The only place I went to was Dette's mostly because of the history of the place. I bought a couple of flies and a map after getting some stream info (you have to buy something if you're getting info at any shop). It is essentially in a house. I drove passed it a couple of times before finally deciding it must be the place. They had a great selection of flies and some of the nicest I have seen. Don't expect to find waders, rods, boots or anything like that. They are pretty much a straight up fly shop. Nice folks in there and I would shop there again. I was told to avoid some of the downtown shops except Dette and Baxter House. I can't speak from experience about the other shops, but I was told to not go to the others and a few internet reports on the other shops were not too friendly. I base a lot of my shopping on customer service and was told Dette and Baxter were top notch for that.

Brandon
Like Bob said it is a quaint little store in their home, they do have a nice selection ( at least when I was there) and they are friendly people. and the other stores like the baxter house owner  Ken is a good and knowledgable guy also, the orvis store and catskill flies are the other stores that I can think of down there , but there is one that I no longer do business with there due to bad customer service.
Good to hear that you will be getting your flies in Dette's shop

Thank you guys for your help. I did send up sample flies to Joe and he gave me my first order today. Getting ready to get behind the vise right after this post. My fortune cookie says: "there's a lot of tying in your future!" Lol!

Thanks for the advice and your help.

All the best!
