Eastern Europe Advice
« on: May 02, 2011, 02:08:51 PM »
So I already threw this out there a couple of months ago but got little response.  Thought I would try again.

In January I am moving to the city of Kielce in Poland.  It's located between Krakow and Warsaw in the south eastern region of the country.  I know there is some pretty famous water about 4 hours south east (river San) and have found a bit of other information, but on the whole the search has been a little tough.  I was hoping to find maybe some polish fishing forums, or some helpful blogs or something.  I know Kielce is at the base of the Holy Cross Mtns so I was hoping there was some fish-able waters in the region as I will likely not have a vehicle when I am there.

I'll living there for at least 12 months and even though it will be difficult without a vehicle, I still want to fish if at all possible, and there is obviously a lot of fly fishing going on in poland.  Would be an awesome check on the list to catch some eastern european grayling.  Thanks in advance for any leads.

This website might help some. I use this site for different fly patterns and stuff. I know you can sign up and join the site but I'm not sure if there's any kind of forum...it might be worth while checking out at least.

Good Luck

Daniel,
I fished the San and some of its tribs for the World Championships last year but I don't know much about the area you'll be in. It seemed as if many of the rivers around the countryside had fish so I'm betting you'll be able to figure something out. I just through the local map away that they gave us or I would be able to give you more specifics. Good luck. I'm sure you'll check your grayling off.

Thanks guys,

I suspect there will be fish-able water close to where I'll live.  A lot of that I wont be able to feel out until I actually get there.  Ask around about fishing/fly fishing to the locals and see what happens.  I was looking for a forum so that I might get in touch with locals and gleam information from them, especially information on the regulations and stuff like that.  Plus maybe I would even find someone willing to fish with me.

Devin, did you like the San when you fished it during worlds?  It looks like a pretty fun river from all I've seen.

Daniel,
The San was in pretty bad shape, being the week after a 100 year flood. The locals were complaining that the river wasn't represented well during the championships but I still enjoyed it very much. You never know whether your next fish will be a big grayling, brown, or huchen. I'd really like to go back with it in shape some year.

Sounds like an excellent opportunity to  take a master class with Vladi or one of the Polish National team members.  I wouldn't pass that up!

I'm sure if you get a hold of Vladi he'd love to show you around.

I'd also strongly recommend that you contact Vladi!

Planning a trip to Poland without dedicating a portion of your time to fish and train with Vladi would be somewhat comparable to Luke taking a trip to the planet Dagobah and not crossing paths with Master Yoda!

Thanks for the suggestions and the Vladi link!  I don't really do any comp angling, but could potentially get involved with it in the future. Nymphing is definitely the weak point in my fishing game, and there is a lot to learn from you guys.  That is why I lurk on here so much.  A day with Vladi would surely be incredible, and from what I could tell reasonable rates!

I'm going to be living in Kielce as a resident artist at a ceramic art residency center so my money is going to be tight (unless I get lots of grant money).  The position is essentially unpaid, they are providing the housing costs, studio space, materials, and kiln costs.  Figuring out how to fish is going to be tricky logistically because I doubt that I am going to have access to a vehicle.

My best bet is going to be meeting local fly fisherman and trying to tag along with them on trips.  I will be there for a full year so I have a lot of time to establish connections.   Thanks for the help.  I'm just trying to live the dream of being young, living in a foreign country, making art, and trying to fish as often as possible.
