That's a nice little read.  We've had to relearn some of those the hardway over the years, eh? lol  Save some of those stories for the campfire:)

You should have to pass a test on these rules to get your license.  Renewed every year:)

I'm half tempted to do a stream etiquette post with regard to the differences between "proper etiquette" on one stream vs "proper etiquette" on another.  Ie...the West Branch of the Delaware vs say the Salmon River.  However, then you get into the differences in etiquette on the same system ie the SR during the Salmon Run in the Fall vs Steelies in the Winter...

It's a slippery slope due to the biggest differentiator of them all...one man perspective of stream etiquette vs an others.

It is however a great read and should be a sticky perhaps???  Yea or nae?

Tight Lines,

Chris

Chris,

That's a really good point.  There are variations as to was is considered acceptable from from stream to stream and person to person.

Stream etiquette is big n crowded situations.  Maybe I'm too passive but I usually don't "wedge in" on people, and If I'm getting wedge I usually just move on.

I've had my share of confrontations on the river and I realized that its just fishing.  I finally thought, is it really worth it to get up in somebody's grill over fish.

As surprising as it seems I think a lot of guys just don't know about regional Stream Etiquette.  Guys driving to Burt Dam during Salmon Season see people stacked shoulder to should at the Dam and think it's perfectly acceptable to walk up in your back-pocket under the Trestle during Steelhead Season.  I say a good rule is try to space yourself evenly depending on how many guys are on the stream as a whole for that time of year.  If fisherman are piled up shoulder-to-shoulder through a certain section than go get it!  If they are generally 30feet spaced through another respect that general spacing and look for an open spot.  It's always a judgment call.  Sometimes we'll see a guy every 200yrds on the West Branch.  You can bet were not driving home though!  We do our due diligence though and search a good portion of the stream for open water... if that's the general spacing than we look to drop in somewhere in-between.  On that particular piece of water, as with most, things vary widely though out the year.  During prime hatches its standard for guys to stack into a good riffle or run... and I mean 4 or 5 to a large portion of water.  Other times of year it's almost an insult to fish close enough so that someone can see you!  lol

However, there is one absolute rule I personally follow.  If I can hit a guy with my backcast, or ESPECIALLY my rod tip it's time to move!

One tough exception to the link chris posted is up stream right of way.  What happens when an upstream indie guy meets a downstream wet fly guy???  Tough call.  I usually give right away to upstream.

Nicely put. Common courtesy and just thinking how you would like to be treated can solve a lot of problems. The good ole golden rule I say....

I have learned that if you are unsure of something, just ask. You may not always get the answer you want, but in that case you'll know you don't want to fish near that guy anyhow. Most people are happy to share water with you, have a conversation and share some tips.

When I go down the Salmon river in my driftboat, I always get my knife out before the trestle pool. It never fails that some pail packing idiot chucks his sinker (notice I didn't say hook) at the boat. I've been hit several times. I just cut their lines and go about my business and tell them if they want their tackle back, meet me at the next launch. No one ever meets me though... Not sure why.
I personally cannot fish this way. Shoulder to shoulder. I feel it is not fair chase for the fish. All that line IS like a net. Someone is bound to snag the fish. The Delaware river. being 50 to 75 yards away from someone is to close. On the Willowemoc, If you can see someone that is to close. If your not sure of the rules, I would watch what everyone else is considering "acceptable behavior".  And that's all I'm gonna say about that.

Those rules remind me of the one rule we should all strive to live by, treat other as you would have them treat you.
