Vise for kids?
« on: December 03, 2011, 09:53:19 PM »
Any suggestions on an economy vise that would be good for a 6year old?

Is there any quality difference between the entry level AA and type vises?

Bought an Anvil Apex for $79.  Awesome vise for beginners!

Hi Dejon,

I bought my daughter when she started a Regal.  I know it was a bit pricey however I found it on eBay for $ 75.00 the reason I bought the Regal was my daughter was able to put the hooks in the vise herself with out help.  The lever to open the jaws provides good leverage and makes it simple.

the anvil apex , griffin , danvise i think are all arround 80-90 bucks , they obviously aren't the quality of a regal or HMH , being 6 yrs old and "knowing" he/she is gonna stick with it , 1 regal will outlast 3 90.00 vises IMO. Take it for whatever it is worth ! Dejon your not starting a fly tying sweat shop for the trout legend store are ya ? ;D ;D

My dad gave me a Regal for Christmas when I was 14. While they are more expensive its hard to argue with their durability and ease of use. It is easily one of the best gifts I have ever received and I look forward to using it for years to come.

D,

It really depends on what you are willing to spend.  You can get a good enough vise to get a kid started a lot cheaper than many of the ones suggested.  Give a price range and I will match you up with some options that I have suggested to guys in the past.

$10-$50

I was thinking one of these because I thought the clamping system might be easier for him to do himself?

They are a good option I use them at my TU Fly Tying classes and have had good luck with them.  They are not the best vise out there but for a kid they works well especially with bigger hooks.

My little boy has been tying nearly a year now, he turned 7 back in August.
I tried him on one of my old Regal vises but it was hard for his little hands to open and close and get his fly in properly. He could manage just fine on my Griffin Montana Mongoose. The Cam jaw was easy for him to operate and he could place his fly without any help. He gradually took ove my Griffin, so I just ended up giving him that vise and buying myself a Renzetti Masetr Vise. I'd been wanting one anyway, and he gave me the perfect excuse.

Kids can learn easier on better gear. If we get them some cheap something that gives them a hard time, they won't stick with it. Any easy to operate cam jaw vise should be fine, it just needs to be one that holds a hook very firm and is super easy to operate. My son ties flies almost everyday. Most days he'll tie a dozen, sometimes he'll tie a box of hooks, just depends on his mood. He doesn't play video games and watches very little tv, he's an outdoors kid and if he has to be inside he ties flies and plays with fishing tackle. He sleeps with a stuffed racoon, a deer hair mouse with the hook removed, and a crankbait without the treble hooks.  And if you give him the choice of what he wants to do for a day, he always wants to float the river.
