Woods Hole, Mass.
« on: October 03, 2011, 10:19:51 PM »
I'll be in Woods Hole, Mass for a week at the end of the month. I know nothing about the area. Is there any fishing within a reasonable distance? I'll be processing research samples in a lab most of the time but if I can slip out for a while I'd like to.

You should take a 9wt and go for stripers and blues. I'm sure there's a shop in the area w/ all the water right there.

Take the ferry over to Martha's Vineyard and fish the beaches there. If you can bum a ride up island, try Lobsterville Beach at Menemsha. Otherwise, try the beach along the lighthouse in Edgartown at night.  Massive striper and bluefish populations there at times.
All you need are white deceivers in various sizes. A chartreuse over white Clouser in a size 2 is a great fly as well.  This is my favorite fishing destination.

you could hit the fall migration which could be good.  i dont think you need to worry about heading over to the vineyard .  there are lots of places to try right in and about woods hole.  i havent lived back in MA for about 5 yrs but bring and 8 or 9 wt and an intermediate line if you have one a floater is fine but an intermediate handles better in waves...you will need white, black, yellow chartruese deceivers, a white and chartruese clouser and a rays fly...you can google the rays ...its just bucktail...olive over yellow over white...very sparse..they count the fibers when tying them...it but its super effective. bring some 15 or 20 lb leader material about 6-8ft..dont worry about taper...some nippers and your boots...thats it.  fish structure (lots of it near woods hole) rockpiles jettys rocky coastline with good wave action can be great this time of year...you can fish beaches but they are harder to read for a first timer...unless there is an all out blitz...stripers hang in the troughs cut out by waves..you cant see them(troughs) and they can be very subtle...most of your fish off the beach will come within 50 ft of the shoreline...i would work up and down a beach casting parrallel to the waves...most guys cast perpendicular and they are wasting a lot of casts.  I would swing the flies wet fly style when possible...you can also cast a two fly or three fly rig but space them at least 25" apart...I like a chartruese fly and any other color on a two fly rig.  a stipping basket can be handy in the surf...be safe and dont wade out far on an incoming tide..also..dont fish dead low tide or dead high tide...moving tides either way get the fish moving.  good luck

Devin...bring a waterproof jacket..and there may be a forum that can hook you up..try to reach out to Kenny Abrames...he lives in RI but may know the woods hole scuttle butt...he has a fabulous website and forum dedicated to old school flyrodding in the surf...cool flys..and intelligent discussion about anything fishing mostly fly fishing for stripers but some good info on trout, steelhead and conventional plugging for stripers on the coast..

can't really comment on that area, but Massachusetts its a small state and there are some good trout streams in the central and western part of the state... check out the swift river.. pretty consistent tail water in the middle of the state.
