Technique Help
« on: June 18, 2009, 10:34:32 PM »
As a novice fly-fisherman, I have a done a ton of research on a variety of techniques and the intricacies of the sport. However, wet fly fishing is where I have the most trouble finding information on. As far as I understand, you cast, let a downstream belly form and then swing the wet fly back to you as the belly takes it with the current. But I am sure that I am probably way off.
I would appreciate any tips or instructions on how to swing a wet fly.

What your doing is not wrong and is the way most people fish wets. There are a ton of ways to fish wets most of which I have not tried (I mostly nymph). You can cast them directly upstream of you and track them back keeping your line off the water and keeping the line tight (long rods help) watching for your line to jump, twitch, stop moving or anything not normal. Thats one way but there are a ton more.

I think Flyfisher has been fishing wets lately he would be a good one to reply.

If you really want to dive into the intricacies of Wet Fly fishing you may consider Davy Wotton's video on the subject:

Ok I see That Dejon mentioned Davy Wotton. I suggest to anyone intereested in wets to get his  video "Wet Fly Ways"

Also some good books are as follows:

Wet Flies by Dave Huges

The Soft-Hackled Fly and Tiny Soft Hackles: A Trout Fisherman's Guide by Sylvester Nemes

This link to mid current rigth up is also a good start.

http://www.midcurrent.com/articles/techniques/likakis_beyondtheswing.aspx

I really think Davy Wottons video is first rate I actually buy a lot of my wet flies directly from him.

Just finished watching Wotton's video Wet Fly Ways. I would highly recommend it to anyone. He covers presentations (up, down, across), wet flies, how to choose your cast of flies, when to use floating vs intermediate lines, reading water for what presentation to use, knots, some history.  Goes well above and beyond just swinging a wet down and across like most people do.  It was very informational and helpful for sure. I now understand and can't wait to try his techniques.
I also watched Kelly Galloups's Streamer Techniques for trophy trout which was good as well. I just order Galloup's Nymphing by the Numbers video. So far I am very impressed with FlyFish TV's how to series.

Wotton's Wet Flies was a pretty decent little video.  Like many videos of the genre it hammers home simple concepts, but overall I thought they did a good job.  Davy seems like a character for sure with his glancing looks telling that sidekick to stop making stupid southern remarks like: "I walk a mile for a brown trout" and let him get on with it.  It does a good job at helping to break that American mentality of just lazily swinging wets down and across.

That river looks spectacular!  I guess that was the White?  You can't blame the guys for picking relatively fishy rivers to make these videos... I'd probably do the same, but it would be nice to see these techniques deployed on tough rivers with horrible conditions.

I think that was mostly on the White but I think some may have been on the Little Red as well.

Hey easy on the stupid Southern remarks crack yankee boy ;) ;D
The side kick had a local GA fly shop hat on, Unicoi.  I was wondering if they may have been fishing in the private waters of said shop.
I would like to see the rest of the video, after that little clip.
So netflix carries his series?

I'll ask Jake from our team.  He works at Unicoi and would know if it's their water.

Ditto that. It seems that most of my (short) career has been centred on wets (mostly NC Spiders and their ilk).

Davy - Welcome aboard. I am glad you are here and also wanted to say thanks. I've learned a great deal from Wet Fly Ways, and your tying tutorials in the Fly Fishing TV series with Kelly Galloup. I also use the Wotton leader knot and Davy knot for tying my fly on which have both saved me time on the water. Enjoy TL.
